What is SQL Server FineBuild?

FineBuild provides 1-click install and best-practice configuration of SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2008, and SQL Server 2008 R2.

Download FineBuild and read SQL Server FineBuild QuickStart for details of setting up the install media and additional community content. Then do your first FineBuild!

There are three members of the FineBuild family:

FineBuild Version 2.0.0 for SQL Server 2008
FineBuild Version 1.1.0 for SQL Server 2005
A beta version of FineBuild V2.1 includes support for Windows 2008 R2, SQL Server Express Edition, and SQL Server 2008 R2. It is available at Version 2.1.0

What is SQL Server FineBuild?

FineBuild Version 2.0.0 for SQL Server 2008
FineBuild Version 1.1.0 for SQL Server 2005

FineBuild can install SQL Best Practice Analyzer as part of the SQL Server 2005 install process.

SQL Best Practice Analyzer is produced by Microsoft, and is part of the SQL Server Feature Pack. It was chosen to be included in FineBuild because it provides recommendations and best practices to determine if there are potential issues in the database environment. This feature is only valid for SQL Server 2005. It can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=DA0531E4-E94C-4991-82FA-F0E3FBD05E63&displaylang=en

FineBuild will automatically perform a SQL Best Practice Analyzer install if SQL Server 2005 is installed, and move its menu items to the Configuration Tools menu.

Install SQL 2005 Backward Compatibility

FineBuild can install SQL 2005 Backward Compatibility as part of the SQL Server 2008 install process.

SQL 2005 Backward Compatibility is produced by Microsoft, and is part of the SQL Server Feature Pack. It was chosen to be included in FineBuild because it provides compatibility with SQL Server 2000 DMO and other objects. This feature is installed automatically by the Microsoft SQL Server install for most editions of SQL Server, but is not included in the SQL Server 2008 x86 or Express edition install. FineBuild will automatically perform a SQL 2005 Backward Compatibility install if SQL Server 2008 x86 or Express Edition is installed. No further configuration is required.

SSIS Raw File Reader is written by Simon Sabin, a SQL Server MVP. It was chosen to be included in FineBuild because SSIS lacks the functionality to view the data transfer pipes (Raw files), and this product provides the means to do so. MDX Studio is written by Mosha Pasumansky, one of the world leading experts in Analysis Services. It was chosen to be included in FineBuild because of the significant extra functionality it provides to developers of MDX code.
