Install .Net 4.0
FineBuild can install and configure .Net 4.0 as part of the SQL Server install process.

SQL Server 2012 requires that .Net 4.0 is installed prior to starting the main SQL Server install. It is recommended that .Net 4.0 is installed for all SQL Server installs, to minimise risks if .Net 4.0 is installed at a later date.

For some editions of SQL Server or versions of Windows the install media for .Net 4.0 must be downloaded, for others the install media is included. The table below shows when you must do a download.

Operating system

SQL Server Version

Express Edition

Other Editions

FineBuild Design Criteria
This section describes the principals that guided the FineBuild design.

Purpose
The purpose of the Wiki and the Reference Manual is to provide instructions for installing standardised builds of SQL Server. The standard FineBuild installation includes Service Pack and Cumulative Updates, various community components, and extensive configuration.

FineBuild is a SQL Server Automated Install that is written using a combination of Windows batch commands, VB Script and Powershell. It is designed so that everything it does is open and available for inspection. Where relevant, citations to external sites are given to further explain a process that may appear complicated.

All prompts normally given during the SQL Server install process are suppressed, so that FineBuild runs as a silent unattended install.

FineBuild also uses the principle of minimum possible security rights. None of the accounts needed to run or manage SQL Server need to have Windows Administrator authority - everything can operate using standard accounts.

Scope
This document describes four standard builds of SQL Server.

The quickest way to install SQL Server using FineBuild is to use one of the FineBuild Standard Builds. For people new to FineBuild, it is recommended that the Workstation Build described in the Quick Start document is completed before attempting a more complex installation.

The tasks given in the sections below must be completed to perform a standard SQL Server installation on to a database server.
- Install Preparation
- SQL Server Install
- SQL Server Fixes Install
- Extra Components Install
- SQL Server Configuration
- User Preferences Configuration

The tasks given in section Workstation Build install are only required when SQL Server is being installed on to a workstation or to a small server.

The tasks given in section Client Tools install are only required where just the client components of SQL Server are being installed.

The tasks in the Reference Manual Appendix contain advice and troubleshooting details only, and do not need to be completed during the installation process.

FineBuild is designed to work with all editions of SQL Server on both 64-bit (x64) and 32-bit (x86) versions on Windows server and client operating systems from Windows XP onwards. It can be delivered using an interactive install, a consolidated automated install, or by a distribution tool such as Altiris . To obtain the best performance, SQL Server should be installed on Windows 2012.

The reasons for performing a given task and how to complete it are given only in enough detail to provide clarity or where special emphasis is required based on the Assumptions below. It is expected that FineBuild will be periodically revised to ensure it remains relevant and consistent.

The examples in the Reference Manual feature a SQL Server 2008 install. The same process applies to installs of all the other SQL Server versions supported by FineBuild.

Compliance with Technical and Security Requirements
The builds described in this document are environment-neutral, but are designed to support applications that require rigorous technical and security requirements.

A detailed statement of compliance to security standards is not required for this document. However, when a build is instantiated on to a server, the Handover and other documentation for that server and the applications hosted on it should demonstrate compliance to site standards.

Assumptions
The way in which these procedures are written is based upon two key assumptions that allow the detail of procedures to be omitted from this document:

Competency of Staff
The document is targeted at staff within a Database Administration Team and it is expected that staff will be familiar with work that is relevant to their own role. Where tasks can be assumed to be within the competence of the individuals performing the role, detailed procedures have been omitted.

Staff should seek assistance from their management if they are unsure of the best methodology to use or the procedure to be followed.

Availability of Other Documentation
Many documents are referenced in these procedures, e.g. in-house produced documents and checklists, SQL Server Books Online (BOL), as well as external material that is regarded as best practice. Individuals who need detailed information on how to perform a particular task or administrative procedure are expected to consult this information.

Server Hardware and Operating System
The configuration of the server hardware and operating system that will host SQL Server is outside the scope of FineBuild. It is assumed that the server hardware and operating system will have been configured so they are adequate to support the expected workload.

Copyright © 2011 - 2013 Edward Vassie. License and Acknowledgements

Previous FineBuild Introduction

Top

FineBuild Standard Builds Next

Updated Wiki: FineBuild Reviews

Previous License and Acknowledgements

FineBuild Change History Next

Install .Net 3.5

FineBuild can install and configure .Net 3.5 as part of the SQL Server install process.

SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 require that .Net 2.0 SP2 and .Net 3.5 SP1 is installed prior to starting the main SQL Server install. These components can also be installed for SQL Server 2005.

It is recommended that you also
Install .Net 4.0 at this time, to avoid potential issues if you decide you need it at a later date.

For some editions of SQL Server or versions of Windows the install media for .Net 3.5 must be downloaded, for others the install media is included. The table below shows when you must do a download.

If you need to do a download, then choose the correct process for your operating system.:

Windows 2012 or Windows 8
Windows 2008 R2 or Windows 7
Windows 2008 or below

Download for Windows 2012 or Windows 8

This covers Windows 8 and Windows 2012

1) Obtain a copy of the Windows 2012 install media. This can be the free
Evaluation Edition ISO media.

2) Create a sub-folder of Additional Components\Redist called SXS

3) Mount the DVD containing the Windows 2012 or Windows 8 install media

4) Copy the contents of the \Sources\SXS folder from the DVD to the Additional Components\Redist\SXS folder

Over 1,000 files in the SXS folder are referenced for the .Net 3.5 install, and it is easier to copy all files than to select just the ones needed.

Download for Windows 2008 R2 or Windows 7

If you are installing on Windows 2008 R2 or Windows 7, FineBuild will always install .Net 3.5 using the media included with Windows. No download is needed.

Download for Windows 2008 or below

This covers Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows Vista and Windows 2008

1) Obtain a copy of any SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2 server edition media. This can be the free
Evaluation Edition media.

2) Copy the following folder containing the .Net 3.5 media

Version

Source

Destination

SQL 2008

\x86\redist\DotNetFrameworks

Additional Components\Redist

SQL 2008 R2

\redist\DotNetFrameworks

Additional Components\Redist

FineBuild .Net 3.5 Install

Automated installation of .Net 3.5 is performed by Process Id 2AF. FineBuild will always install .Net 3.5 if the install media is available.

Manual .Net 3.5 Install

The following steps show what you would have to do to install .Net 3.5 manually. FineBuild does all of this work for you automatically.
Manual Install for Windows 2012 or Windows 8
Manual Install for Windows 2008 R2 or Windows 7
Manual Install for Windows 2008 and Below

Manual Install for Windows 2012 or Windows 8

This covers Windows 8 and Windows 2012

1) Run the following command, using the relevant file name in place of Additional Components

Dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFX3 /All /Source:Additional Components\redist\sxs /LimitAccess

Top

Manual Install for Windows 2008 R2 or Windows 7

1) If you are running on Windows 2008 R2 Server Core, then run the following commands:

OCSetup "NetFx2-ServerCore"
OCSetup "NetFx3-ServerCore"
OCSetup "ServerCore-WOW64"
OCSetup "NetFx2-ServerCore-WOW64"
OCSetup "NetFx3-ServerCore-WOW64"

2) If you are running on Windows 2008 R2 desktop or on Windows 7, then run the following command:

OCSetup "NetFx3"

Top

Manual Install for Windows 2008 and Below

This covers Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows Vista and Windows 2008

1) Navigate to the install media and double-click on the following file:

Express Edition

Version

Install .Net 3.5
FineBuild can install and configure .Net 3.5 as part of the SQL Server install process.

SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 require that .Net 2.0 SP2 and .Net 3.5 SP1 is installed prior to starting the main SQL Server install. These components can also be installed for SQL Server 2005.

It is recommended that you also Install .Net 4.0 at this time, to avoid potential issues if you decide you need it at a later date.

For some editions of SQL Server or versions of Windows the install media for .Net 3.5 must be downloaded, for others the install media is included. The table below shows when you must do a download.

Operating system

SQL Server Version

Express Edition

Other Editions

Download for Windows 2008 R2 or Windows 7
If you are installing on Windows 2008 R2 or Windows 7, FineBuild will always install .Net 3.5 using the media included with Windows. No download is needed.

Backup Reporting Services Encryption Keys
FineBuild can backup the encryption keys used by Reporting Services.

Reporting services uses encryption keys to secure credentials and connection information. A backup should be taken of these keys in case the information is needed for troubleshooting purposes.

FineBuild Backup Reporting Services Encryption Keys
Starting with FineBuild v3.2.0 beta 2, the Backup Reporting Services Encryption Keys processing relates to Process Id 5CHC. Prior to this it the process Id was 5CGC.

If Reporting Services is installed along with the Report Services database, the Backup Reporting Services Encryption Keys processing will always be performed.

FineBuild also uses the following parameteReporting Services to help perform the Backup Reporting Services Encryption Keys processing:

Prameter

Default Value

Description

DrvBackup

System Drive

Drive for SQL Server backup files

DirSSQL

SQLFiles

High level folder for SQL Server files

Instance

MSSQLSERVER

Name of SQL Instance to be installed

SAPwd

none

Password for sa account

Top

A backup should be taken of these keys in case the information is needed for troubleshooting purposes.

FineBuild Backup Reporting Services Encryption Keys
Starting with FineBuild v3.2.0 beta 2, the Backup Reporting Services Encryption Keys processing relates to Process Id 5CHC. FineBuild will automatically create the specified User Accounts.

Windows Accounts: FineBuild will read parameters WinLogin01 to WinLogin99, stopping at the number given by
NumLogins, and create a login for any account found.

SQL Accounts: FineBuild will read parameters UserLogin01 to UserLogin99, stopping at the number given by
NumLogins, and create a login for any account and password found.

Top

Manual Configure User Accounts

The following steps show what you would have to do for manual User Accounts configuration. FineBuild does all of this work for you automatically.

1) Create required Windows Accounts

Run the following command to create each Windows Account

CREATE LOGIN [WinLoginnn] FROM WINDOWS

2) Create required SQL Accounts

Run the following command to create each SQL Account

CREATE LOGIN [UserLoginnn] WITH PASSWORD='UserPasswordnn'

Configure User Accounts

FineBuild can add both Windows and SQL accounts to SQL Server.

FineBuild will create the accounts, but it does not assign any authorities to ther accounts. Further advice on how to deal with user accounts is given in
User Account Maintenance in the FineBuild Reference manual.

FineBuild Configure User Accounts

Starting with FineBuild v3.2.0 beta 2, the User Accounts configuration relates to Process Id
5CG. Prior to this it was part of
Configure Standard Accounts. It is controlled by the parameters below:

Parameter

Build

SQL 2005

SQL 2008

SQL 2008 R2

SQL 2012

FineBuild also uses the following parameters to help Configure User Accounts:

Prameter

Default Value

Description

NumLogins

20

Number of User Accounts to process

WinLogin01 to WinLogin99

none

Name of Windows Account to add to SQL Server

UserLogin01 to UserLogin99

none

Name of SQL Account to add to SQL Server

UserPassword01 to UserPassword99

none

Password for relevant SQL Account

FineBuild will automatically create the specified User Accounts.

Windows Accounts: FineBuild will read parameters WinLogin01 to WinLogin99, stopping at the number given by
NumLogins, and create a login for any account found.

SQL Accounts: FineBuild will read parameters UserLogin01 to UserLogin99, stopping at the number given by
NumLogins, and create a login for any account and password found.

Top
