Configure Reporting Services IIS Alias

FineBuild can configure an IIS Alias for Reporting Services.

An IIS Alias allows a 'user-friendly' name to be used to access Reporting Services, eliminating the need for users to know details of the server name or the Reporting Services instance name in order to access Reporting Services.

For example:
  • SSRS is installed on server PDGB01SQLS0034
  • A DNS alias is created called REPORTS that points to that server
  • FineBuild creates an IIS alias for SSRS
  • A user enters REPORTS in the address bar of their browser, and the DNS alias causes the request to be routed to server PDGB01SQLS0034
This will be treated by IIS as landing on the default page in the default website. The DEFAULT.HTM file created by FineBuild will then route the request to SSRS, and so the user request for REPORTS will open Report Manager on server PDGB01SQLS0034.

FineBuild Configure Reporting Services IIS Alias

The Configure Reporting Services IIS Alias processing relates to Process Id 5CHD and is controlled by the parameters below:
Install Parameter Build SQL2005 SQL2008 SQL2008 R2 SQL2012 SQL2014 SQL2016
SetupRSAlias FULL No No No No No No
SetupRSAlias WORKSTATION No No No No No No
SetupRSAlias CLIENT N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A

If the SetupRSAlias parameter is set to Yes then FineBuild will also Install IIS.

The FineBuild Configure Reporting Services IIS Alias processing consists of the following:
  • Install IIS
  • Configure IIS alias for Reporting Services
The DNS alias for the server must be created outside of FineBuild.

Manual Configure Reporting Services IIS Alias

The following steps show what you would have to do for manual Configure Reporting Services IIS Alias processing. FineBuild does all of this work for you automatically.

1) IIS must be installed in order to configure an IIS Alias for Reporting Services

2) A DNS alias for the server must be configured to route user requests to the server

3) Navigate to the folder C:\inetpub\wwwroot and create a file called DEFAULT.HTM.

4) Edit DEFAULT.HTM with an editor such as Notepad.

For a default instance of Reporting Services, insert the following line, replacing ServerName with the name of the server:
<script>window.location='http://ServerName/reports'</script>

For a named instance of Reporting Services, insert the following line, replacing ServerName with the name of the server and Instance with the instance name.
<script>window.location='http://ServerName/ReportServer_Instance/reports'</script>
