Install SQL 2008 Client Tools Build

Automated installation of SQL Server 2008 for a server is performed by Process Id 2BB.

The FineBuild Client Tools build includes the following components:
  • SQL Server Tools

Manual SQL 2008 Client Tools Install

The following steps show what you would have to do to install SQL Server 2008 Client manually. FineBuild does all of this work for you automatically.

1) Start the SQL Server install. The following message is displayed:

2) The SQL Server Installation Center is displayed. Click on Installation.

3) The following window is displayed. Click on New SQL Server stand-alone installation... to continue.

4) The Setup Support Rules are processed. All rules should succeed without any warnings or skipped rules. Click OK to continue.

5) The Setup Support Files window is displayed. Click Install to continue.

6) The Setup Support Rules are run and the results displayed.

- If your machine is not connected to the internet you will see the Microsoft .NET Application Security warning.
- If Windows Firewall is enabled you will see the Windows Firewall warning.

Both these warnings can be ignored. Click Next to continue.

7) The Product Key window is displayed. Enter the product key and click Next to continue. The 25 character Product Key should be held in the DBA Password Store.

If no product key is given, the Enterprise Evaluation Edition will be installed.

8) Accept the License Terms. Click Next to continue.

9) Select the components to be installed. For a Client build, select the components shown below, and then click Next to continue. The x86 directory is only shown on a x64 system.

- Business Intelligence Development studio
- Client Tools connectivity
- Client Tools Backwards Compatibility
- Client tools SDK
- SQL Server Books Online
- Management Tools – Basic
- Management Tools – Complete

The directories should be set to the following values:
Shared feature directory E:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server
Shared feature directory (x86) C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server

10) The Instance Configuration window is displayed. Supply the following values then click Next to continue.

Instance Id CLIENT
Instance root directory E:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server

11) The disk space requirements are displayed. Click Next to continue.

12) The Error and Usage Reporting window is displayed. Ensure both check boxes are clear, and then click Next to continue.

13) The Installation Rules window is displayed. Click Next to continue.

14) The Ready to Install window is displayed. Click Install to continue.

15) The Installation Progress window is displayed. Please wait until the SQL Server installation completes.

16) Eventually the Setup will complete. Check that all components have a green tick to indicate a completed install, and that the Status of each component is Success. Click Next to continue.

17) The Complete window is eventually displayed. Click Close to continue.
